Today Max asked me if ants have noses. I think he's asked me this before, but today he insisted that I “look it up.” So I did-- ants smell with their antennae. “What about crabs?” (I looked it up.) Crabs smell with their antennules. “What about beetles?” According to Wikipedia, beetles smell with their antennae too. Over lunch he thought of some more-- “What about flies, I forgot to ask about them. Oh, and do they have eyes?”
Remember before the Internet, when parents could just say, “I don't know?”

LOVE IT! Kids are the sure fire way to put a smile on your face.
Amber, this is unreal! Anna & Sophia asked the SAME question yesterday! I can't believe it. They asked if bugs have noses. I said we'd check the Internet (we were out) and we forgot. So thanks for the answer. (I'd guessed that they smell with their antennae or legs. In science camp this summer we learned that butterflies taste with their legs.) I guess "in the olden days" parents got to say, "Let's check out a library book" which I still say sometimes . . . because I want them to value libraries as a great source of info. But ya just can't beat Google.
I gave Lucy the project of looking up professions in which you get to ride a horse. She asked me where to look and I told her we'd check the Internet and the library. I can't even remember HOW to look things up in the library anymore. Sad. Lucky thing we're there every week. We're bound to find something.
What a great mom you are to take the time to look it all up! It never ceases to amaze me how INTERESTING kids' questions can be. If only they didn't lose that as they grow up. I guess some don't. Probably the ones whose mothers take the time to help them find their answers!
Your kids are so cute! I just saw you had a blog it's so fun to read what everyone is up too. We live in spokane not to far from you. We saw your parents this weekend they are so nice and made us a yummy dinner. Oh by the way this is Amy Barlow Kevins wife. It will be fun to keep up with you.
