Nuts and Treats

We have started to feel like it is time for us to work on teaching Maxwell how to manage his own peanut allergy, so that he can feel confident as he grows older. We have been taking the time to point out the person eating peanut butter sitting near us, and the peanuts and peanut butter in the grocery store so he can be aware of what he needs to avoid.

Today, we were reading a Christmas book that along with tangerines and holly, apples and pine sprigs, pictured nuts throughout the story. I paused to show him the pictures of the different nuts and told him they weren't safe for him. He said, “I know, Mom, but how do the nuts get in all the treats?”

I am glad he is understanding and accepting all that comes with a food allergy, but I feel sad that he misses out on so much because "the nuts get in all the treats."

What a good looking kid. I need to talk to him about my peanut allergy.

Oh Max, you little heartbreaker! It's really true, my good friend's daughter has nut allergies & we have a hard time finding desserts to share together (especially this time of year). How DO all the nuts get in the treats?

i hate nuts in treats. Why do people like nuts in things. I find it odd. Poor Maxwell. I do LOVE peanut butter. I would freak out if i couldn't have it.

What a bummer for such a small kid to have to deal with... and his parents, too!

I'm with you on this one, Amber. Our 4 year old has peanut allergy too. Not so fun. Is anything yummier than chocolate and PB? At least it's not an allergy to all dairy or gluetin or something so far reaching. I don't know how those families do it! What I want to know is why these allergies are becoming so prevalent!

Amber, I wish I had a trick, but I don't. We just got lucky I guess. His blood and skin test were not consistant so they did an oral test and he had no reactions. It is a sad thing..food allergies.
